- Regal Road School Portico unveiling– on December 7th there was very good attendance for the unveiling of the freshly restored portico. All the staff and students were present along with members of the community, Councillor Palacio and his assistant Mike, former principal Uton Robinson, 2 former teachers from 50 years ago, and members of the school board staff. Photos of the event will be posted at and . Harry Lay and Florence will now work with Mike Foderick on developing two plaques: one to commemorate the restoration, and one to identify the school on the medallion at the top of the portico.
- Community Heritage exhibits – Jane Beecroft who has been coordinating the restoration of the Toll Keepers Cottage is planning a community heritage exhibit on February 17th and 18th from 11-6 p.m.. She has invited RHRA to set up a display table. Items in our display will include information on the Dufferin/St Clair library murals, Regal Rd. School portico restoration and Garrison Creek markers. Several executive members agreed to help staff the table.
- St. Clair West in Pictures 3rd edition request – In follow-up to discussions at the November public meeting, Dick will write a letter to the library to re-request a 3rd printing.
- Earlscourt Room proposal – In follow-up to discussions from the November public meeting, Dick will write a letter to the library with the request to have the program room named the 'Earlscourt Room'.
- Street Beautification
- Gardens and street planters – two planters in front of the Dufferin/St Clair library will be relocated because of the renovations. The forsythia and rose bushes in the library parkette will also need to be relocated in the spring, possibly to the Oakwood Collegiate gardens. Litter in the Library Parkette is a continuing problem.
- Street clutter and damage - Councillor Palacio’s office has been very helpful in dealing with vandalism done over the Xmas break. Overturned barrels and mailboxes have been righted. Graffiti problems on city saltboxes have been corrected.
- Tree Boulevards –Dick is developing a list of potential streets suitable for tree-boulevard installations. Mike and Cinzia volunteered to assist. Mike will arrange for necessary technical assistance by city staff.
- Communications
The homepage and some information on our website needs updating. A Website Updating Committee (Dick, Florence, David Shanoff and Art Dacks) has been established to make the necessary changes.
- Schools
- Regal Road – Principal Christine Von Aesch is extending her sick leave. Acting principal Seija Hyhko’s last day is January 31st. Parent Council meeting on January 17th will be addressing the principal issue. Superintendent Rauda Dickinson will be in attendance. In early December, a very well attended Festival of Lights and Music potluck was held. Some 250 people joined in the food, carol sing and games. On December 26th, the school was broken into. A large TV, teacher’s bike and a few new tricycles from the daycare were taken. No door locks were broken, and the security alarm was not tripped. Police are investigating.
- Oakwood – The safety officer from the Toronto School Board has granted OCI the funds to have 16 security cameras installed both in and outside of the school. More lights are now turned on at night in response to community requests.
- Special Events
- Carol Sing – the carol sing was a success with approximately 130 people in attendance. It was proposed that we increase our donation to the Salvation Army next year from $100 to $200. This was agreed, provided that we have enough funds next year to make the increase.
- Planning and Zoning
- Mount Royal Parkette – construction on the parkette has been stopped. A public meeting will be held at Regal Road School on January 17th to consider alternative plans addressing the height of the retaining wall and access through the parkette from Mt Royal to Alberta.
- St. Clair Transit ROW – Mike assured the meeting that there is sufficient support from Councillor Palacio and from the community to persuade the TTC to retain the Northcliffe and Glenholme stops as requested in our letter of May 19, 2005 to the TTC.
- St. Paul’s Church proposal – the St. Clair W housing group has been planning to convert 1120 Ossington into 20 affordable housing units (10 to be sold at market price, and 10 at affordable pricing). A public meeting held in December was very well attended. The prevailing sentiment was that of opposition. On January 11 the application was approved by the Committee of Adjustment, but opposing residents may appeal the decision.
- 1248 Davenport proposal – an application to the Committee of Adjustment to construct a three-story apartment building and rebuild the garage has met with some opposition from neighbours. The application has been deferred so the applicant can discuss the issues with neighbours.
- Parking on both sides of Lauder – a request to the councillor’s office for parking on both sides of the street resulted in a poll of the residents on Lauder. The results were 3 in favour, and 19 opposed. The request will not be implemented. Residents will be notified in writing within the next week.
- St. Clair W Avenue Study update – the draft report from the consultants is expected soon. It is anticipated that there will be one more public consultation in each of the two areas between Bathurst and Gunns Rd.
- Membership
We presently have 180 addresses on the e-mail list receiving RHRA broadcasts, but we have only 73 paid-up family-memberships ($10 per family annually from May to April) to support and fund our activities. It was agreed that a note should go out to the entire e-mail list as a reminder to those who have not renewed their membership.
- Finances
We have: $540.53 in our Operating Account
$86.50 in petty cash, and
$805.00 in reserve in the Heritage Account.
- Other
- Beer store closing: implications – the beer store at the corner of Lauder and St. Clair closed Dec. 31. Concerns about the loss of a legitimate business within walking distance, and hopes it will not be replaced by another dollar store were expressed. Some members felt that the beer store was an anchor business in the area and is already being missed. Individuals who feel the same way and who may wish to write to request the reinstatement of the store can do so by writing to:
Joe Chih

- Denis Cadorette retirement – the last police meeting was a full house as a tribute was made to retiring Constable Denis Cadorette. Many thanks to Officer Cadorette who has spent the last 30 years serving our community.
- Bikes on sidewalks – Mike reported that signs will be installed on St. Clair, within a few weeks, to indicate that bike riding on the sidewalks is not permitted
- Roseneath Gardens Parkette – negotiations towards the acquisition of the parkette by the City are ongoing.
Next Meeting: Tuesday February 20, 2007, 7:30 pm at 33 Regal Road, residence of
