Minutes - Tuesday February 21, 2006
- Heritage and History
- Regal Rd School Portico -The School Board, Harry Lay and Mike Foderick are continuing their efforts to reach agreement on the best way to carry out the restoration with the available city funds of $20,000.
- Conservation/preservation in Regal Heights -
- a letter drafted by David Raymont in support of having Davenport Rd. designated as a heritage route has been sent to Councillor Palacio. Councillor Palacio has responded that he will support this request when it is presented at City Council.
- David Raymont is preparing an "outline" re: preservation/conservation of heritage/historic sites in Regal Heights.
- Library Murals - David Self and John McAuley have reported that Dufferin/St. Clair Library has budgeted for renovations and restoration of the library to be carried out in 2006/2007. Plans include the restoration of the George Reid murals on the north wall, and two Doris McCarthy murals now in the Italian room. A public meeting will be held soon for the entire community to view the renovation plans.
- Street Beautification
- Graffiti - graffiti at the following locations has been removed since our last meeting: the Davenport Rd. retaining wall, 98 Glenholme, and the Regal Road School. Planter boxes on St. Clair Ave at Glenholme are in need of graffiti removal.
- Street lights out - please call 416 542-3195 and report any streetlights that are out in your area. Information to be provided when calling includes the street light pole number and the house address nearest to the burned out streetlight.
- Daffodil Hill Clean-up - Spring is around the corner and help to clean up the hill in preparation for the show of blooming daffodils is requested. Volunteers should be at the hill on Sunday March 26th at 10 am. Please wear good shoes, gloves and bring garden shears and a rake.
- Earth Day on April 22nd - Charles Caccia will again be handing out free tree seedlings at Dufferin Mall in support of Earth day.
- Communications and Website
- Advertising policy - a request to place a commercial advertisement on our RHRA website was received. David Shanoff and Dick felt that this was not appropriate use of our website and referred the request
- Background & objectives of RHRA - a suggestion was made to include information on the history, make-up, purpose and membership on our website for those new to the area. Beth and Laura agreed to work on a draft and request input from others .
- St. Clair West BIA
- Decorative lighting - Several years ago, the St.Clair West Village Assoc. (SWVA) arranged for installation of decorative lighting in the current St. Clair West BIA area. The lights are now in need of repair and replacement. Judy Adler, chair of the SWVA Decorative Lighting committee, is cooperating with the BIA to plan for necessary repairs etc. SWVA funds will be made available to the project, but action will likely be delayed until changes to St. Clair Ave re: the TTC ROW are known.
- Sunflower Festival - David Shanoff will speak to Tony Bolla as to what kind of involvement is sought from RHRA.
- Jeri Brodie has agreed to continue as RHRA representative to St.Clair West BIA meetings.
- Planning and Zoning
- 41 Rosemount development decision, tree removal - as a result of the Feb. 2 hearing of the Committee of Adjustment, the house to be built is to be reduced by 150 sq ft, and shortened so it will be set back 11 ft from the street. City Council has approved removal of the diseased tree at the back of the lot, while the front Norway Maple is to be retained and protected during construction. Two new trees are to be planted on the property and the developer must make a payment to the Forestry department for the planting of a new tree on the street allowance adjacent to the property.
- St. Clair Transit: legal proceedings - Mayor David Miller announced today that the Divisional Court of Ontario has ruled that the St. Clair Avenue West Transit Improvements project can proceed. SOS and their solicitors are considering whether or not to appeal the decision.
- St. Clair Avenue Study - the purpose of the study is to identify a vision and implementation strategy to guide future development in the area from Bathurst St. to Keele St.. And, in keeping with the objectives of the Official plan, to increase density in anticipation of population growth. Two consultation groups have been created:
- from Keele St. to Glenholme Ave (west division), and
- from Glenhome Ave to Bathurst St. (east division). Some residents from Regal Heights have volunteered to sit on local advisory committees (LAC's). LAC reps. include: Peter Norman (west area) and Dick Watts (east area). John Keating will assist Peter and Dick in considering issues on this project. Three public meetings and some LAC meetings will be held to get public input. The first public meetings will be on March 1, 2006 at 7 pm at Joseph J. Piccininni Community Centre for the west division, and on March 8, 2006 at 7 pm at St. Matthews Church for the east division.
- Official Plan: Guidelines for Height/Density Incentives - no interest to look into this issue was shown by any present.
- Other
- OCI Music Department fundraiser - a silent auction will be held this Saturday February 25th at Oakwood Village Library from 4 to 8 pm.
- OCI steps & sidewalk replacement - replacement of the steps and sidewalk this summer at OCI has not yet been fully confirmed.
- Governing Toronto - the Mayor will host four public meetings to get input. Pre-registration is necessary. The meetings will be held on: March 2nd at Etobicoke Collegiate, March 4th at St. Lawrence Hall, March 6th at North York Memorial Hall, and March 8th at Scarborough Civic Centre. Meetings are at 7 pm except March 4 at 2 pm.
- Cycling news - Laura McGrath reported that a St. Clair Bicycle Users Group (BUG) has been established. 8 bus routes in Toronto are piloting the use of bike racks on the fronts of buses. Two of the routes run through our area: the Dufferin bus and the Ossington bus that runs up Oakwood Ave. Instructions for mounting bikes on the bus can be found on the TTC website as well as at the Bike show at the National Trade Centre, March 3 to 5. Bike week will be during the week of May 29th.
- Eroding retaining wall - Rosa Cordiano reported that the hill beside her home at the corner of Burlington and Alberta Ave has been eroding over the past few years. Last year, the city agreed to build a 3 ft retaining wall. Construction is yet to begin.
