Regal Heights Residents’ Association Executive Meeting minutes – Tuesday March 20, 2007

Present: Linda DeGiorgio, John Keating, Anita Kung, Harry Lay, Peter Norman, David Raymont, Dick and Florence Watts.
Regrets: Richard Cavanagh, Rosa Cordiano, Mike Foderick, Peggy Lampotang.

  1. Membership
    Since the emailing in December, 21 additional membership payments have been received. We now have 89 paid family memberships for the year of May 2006-April 2007. It was decided that similar e-mailing notices should be sent twice a year, one month following each of the public meetings. The notices could encourage people to buy gift memberships for non-members in Regal Heights.


  2. Finances
    Operating Acct. balance: $711.50; Heritage Account balance: $805


  3. Heritage and History
    1. Letter to library officials - Dick has written a follow-up letter to the City Librarian regarding our request for the re-printing of the St. Clair West in Pictures book, and the naming of the program room as the Earlscourt Room. However, no response has yet been received. A number of suggestions on how to proceed were discussed.
    2. Plaques for Regal Road School
      1. design & wording – a draft sample of the wording on the plaque is being worked on by Dick, Mike Foderick, John K., David R., Harry Lay, and Heritage Toronto.
      2. funds – RHRA may need to contribute to the cost of the plaque. Costs need to be determined before any decisions are made. David R., John K and Dick will determine costs of plaques in various materials.


  4. Street Beautification
    1. Daffodil Hill clean up – the daffodils are starting to sprout on the hill. A clean up of the hill is scheduled for Sunday March 25 at 10am. It should take about one hour to complete. All volunteers are welcome to help. Bring gloves and sturdy shoes.
    2. Plant transfers from library to OCI – the rose bushes by the library need to be moved before the library renovations begin. They will be moved to the cherry tree area north of the parking lot. A date to transplant the bushes will be determined as weather permits. Volunteers are needed - contact Florence.
    3. Funds for plants etc – The Street Beautification Committee was authorized to spend up to $200 for this year's plantings and barrel maintenance.


  5. Donations
    1. Tree seedlings – Charles Caccia is once again donating evergreen seedlings on Earth Day weekend, April 20 & 21. The Street Beautification Committee has requested 100 seedlings, one to be delivered to each RHRA member-family. As seedlings mature, members may wish to transplant them to Daffodil Hill.
    2. Orchids – Whole Foods Market has donated 12 orchid plants to RHRA. Florence has made arrangements for the St. Matthews Bracondale Seniors' Residence to be the recipient. Ariela Weisfeld will deliver them to the residence on March 21.


  6. Mayor’s Clean-up Day
    the RHRA clean-up will take place on Saturday April 21st at 10 am. Meet at OCI parking lot. John K has agreed to co-ordinate our clean-up again this year.


  7. Schools
    Regal Road – Principal Von Aesch will be retiring on March 30th. Procedures for appointing a new principal are underway.


  8. Planning and Zoning
    1. Mount Royal Parkette – Revised conceptual plans have been completed. Councillor Palacio and Kevin Bowser, Parks Manager for our district, will meet March 27 to plan for resuming construction.
    2. Rooming house licence renewal for 63 Oakwood – Councillor Palacio will be advised that no comments have been received from nearby RHRA members.
    3. 1248 Davenport – proposed plans to enlarge the house will cause view obstructions for some residents on Regal Road. The owner's consultant and the affected residents are discussing a possible solution .


  9. BIA/Community Links
    1. draft outline – Dick and Tony Bolla have drafted a discussion outline on possible strategies for working with the BIA to improve the physical and functional character of St.Clair Avenue.
      Comments on the outline will be solicited from all interested individuals, and there may eventually be a public meeting to further explore the possible strategies.
    2. Delegate to BIA meetings – No-one is available to attend the March 21 meeting, but Peter Norman expressed interest in attending a future BIA meeting. It was suggested that we might try to arrange for rotating delegates.


  10. Other
    1. Annual Meeting – will be held on Tuesday May 15th, 7 pm at Oakwood Collegiate.
    2. Side Space Gallery – has been found to be using an unlicensed enclosure on City property. Councillor Palacio has written to Road Allowance Licensing and Enforcement in support of the gallery.
    3. A street-name sign policy has been recently adopted by City Council. A drawing or photo of the proposed design has been requested for a future RHRA meeting.
