
Regal Heights Residents’ Association Executive Meeting

- Heritage and History
- Tree Planting in Memory of Charles Caccia: A Freeman Maple will be planted on the west side of the front lawn at Regal Road School and a dedication ceremony will take place on a school day in mid May. Harry Lay suggested that a photograph of Charles Caccia be hung in the school hallway with a suitable inscription. David Keith and Harry Lay will remove the existing dead tree from the planting site.
- Lane-naming in Memory of John Brooks: Brent reported that the Brooks family are very pleased with the plan. The lane runs from Northcliffe Blvd. to the rear of 8 Springmount Avenue. Brent will discuss with the Brooks family their preferences for the exact name of the lane and the wording of a dedication ceremony. Mike Foderick noted that his office would survey all abutting property owners to determine if there are any objections to the proposal.
- Davenport Road Heritage Designation: Dick attended a meeting at City Hall on March 12, 2009 with a group convened by Councillor Palacio to discuss markers on the route, information re the heritage route that might appear on signs or markers, and the terminal points of the of the designated road. Agreement on the terminal points is still under discussion.
- Street Beautification
- Graffiti and Scratchiti: Mike is following up with TTC re the scratched panels in the bus stops at Oakwood-Highview and Oakwood-Rosemount. It was agreed that, since there has been no graffiti on the new Bell Telephone box at Oakwood Collegiate, we will not proceed with anti-graffiti measures in this location at this time.
- Tree Trimming at Springmount Gardens: Some preliminary trimming has been done, but many branches are in close contact with hydro lines. Further trimming will be done soon in conjunction with Toronto Hydro.
- Bike removal from Glenholme Avenue: The abandoned remains of a bicycle that was locked to a traffic sign near 45 Glenholme has been removed thanks to Richard Cavanagh and his hack saw.
- Planter replacement and additions: Florence reported that some wooden barrels had been damaged over the winter and asked when the concrete planters could be delivered. Mike will let Florence know the date of delivery and said that litter bins will be placed near the planters to dissuade people from throwing trash in the planters.
- Daffodil Hill clean-up, Sunday March 29, 10 am: Linda, Dick, John, Richard and Brian volunteered to assist. Florence will contact others by phone and e-mail.
- Street beautification budget allocation: A budget of $300 was agreed to cover the cost of barrels and other street beautification supplies.
- Mayor's Clean-up day. Saturday April 25th 10am: John Keating volunteered to act as co-ordinator. The City will supply required garbage bags, gloves and tools.
- Compost locations and dates: The first compost day in this area is April 24 at Mount Royal Parkette. Additional locations and dates will be sent out by RHRA Communications in a few days.
- Planning/Zoning, Construction
- Mt. Royal bump-out: A sketch plan has been prepared for discussion at a bump-out committee meeting on March 26.
- St. Clair ROW: David Keith reported that Winona and Oakwood intersections will be worked on in the near future. Details will be sent out via RHRA Communications. The next meeting of the Construction Liaison Committee will be on April 3 at 8 am at 883 St. Clair (the entrance is off Alberta). David Keith urged RHRA members to bring any complaints to these meetings. Anyone who cannot attend should give their concerns to Mike Foderick (mfoderi@toronto.ca) or David Keith (davikeit@gmail.com) who will bring them up at the meetings. David described the narrow and dangerous design of the sidewalk at Dufferin and St. Clair and urged the executive to take an initiative. Mike Foderick will look into this matter and John Keating will draft a letter on behalf of RHRA.
- St. Clair street trees: On Jan.19, the Community Consultation Group presented a report to Councillor Palacio and Rajko Jakovic, the City’s consultant on St.Clair street-tree planting, showing 84 possible additional locations for trees not shown on current plans for the area between Winona Drive and Westmount Ave. On March 9, Mr.Jakovic reported that possibly 30 of the suggested locations seemed suitable for additional trees. Mr.Jakovc’s findings are now being reviewed by City officials to determine if there are any underground utilities that might conflict with these 30 locations.
- Communications
- Bulletin Board/Information Board: Beth Marcilio reported on meeting with Brian Bertrand, the Acting Branch Head of the Dufferin/St. Clair Library. They have a three ring binder in the entrance area. A new board at Loblaws at Christie and Dupont invites the community to submit information for posting. Florence will follow up on Amy Bodman’s suggestion that an outdoor bulletin board be placed in Mt. Royal Parkette. Mike Foderick will facilitate construction of a board when a location is decided.
- E-Mail policy re fundraising information: The following policy was adopted for the guidance of RHRA Communications in circulating fundraising requests. “Information of a fundraising nature will be distributed only for projects and services of RHRA or for local schools or for local social-assistance organizations”
- Back-up person when David Shanoff is away: Peter Norman volunteered to manage the RHRA Communications e-mail list at times when David Shanoff is away.
- Special Events
Community Street Sale Saturday, June 27, 2009: The date for the Street Sale was agreed. The Street Sale Committee will report at the next meeting on detailed plans, advertising, financing etc.
- Finances
Linda De Giorgio reported as follows on the current balances in RHRA accounts: Operations Fund: $1085; Heritage Fund: $1145; Petty Cash: $68; Mt.Royal Bump-out Fund (in trust): $1500.
- Other
- Police Community Partnership 13 Division: Rosa Cordiano attended the March 5 meeting of the Police Community Partnership and reported that a new Task Force was in place involving the Police, Fire Department, and various community agencies to work jointly on solving complex problems. The police warned about telephone scams, and that five cars in the district recently had their windows broken during the night. Rosa volunteered to continue attending the police meetings as our RHRA representative. The boundaries of 13 Division are: Lawrence Ave, Bathurst, Eglinton, Spadina, CPRailway, CN Railway adjacent to Caledonia Park Rd.
- Ward 17 Environment Day is Saturday April 11, 2009 10 am. - 2 pm. at Loretto College School grounds.
- Earth Hour is Saturday March 28, 8:30p.m. - 9:30 pm.: Remember to turn off all your lights as a reminder of the need to conserve energy.
d) International Year of Astronomy, light pollution project: If you want to help reduce wasteful use of artificial light and improve views of the stars, contact Dick Watts at fregal@total.net.
- St.Clair West Revitalization Committee (SWRC): A meeting to tour the new library and discuss district issues will be held at the Dufferin St. Clair Library at 7pm. on March 31. Dick and Florence Watts, Rosa Cordiano and David Keith plan to attend.
- Letter to TPL re. Caroline Ingvaldsen: A letter from RHRA has been sent to the Head Librarian of Toronto Public Library commending the work of Caroline Ingvaldsen and noting that we hope she will soon return to Dufferin-St.Clair Library. Brian Bertrand, acting Branch Head believes Caroline will return in July.
